How does a lift & slide door work?

Accepted Answer

Turning the handle lifts the sliding panel onto its rollers, so even a very large, heavy panel glides open with little effort. When you close the door and lower the handle, the panel drops back down onto its seals, which keeps out weather and draughts. The AP400 system uses a fully vertical lifting mechanism with balanced lifting technology and soft-lift damping.

How big can a lift & slide door be?

Each sliding leaf can be up to 2500mm wide and 2800mm high. A two-panel door can have a frame up to 5000mm wide, and a four-panel door up to 11800mm wide, both up to 2800mm high. The system supports panels up to 300kg each, with options up to 400kg, so it's ideal for very wide openings in new builds and extensions.

What configurations are available?

Lift & slide doors come in two, three and four pane options: 2 pane with 1 sliding panel, 3 pane with 1 sliding panel, and 4 pane with 2 sliding panels that open from the centre. We'll recommend the best layout for your opening when we measure.

Are lift & slide doors energy efficient?

Yes. The frames are thermally broken aluminium with a 24mm polyamide thermal barrier and cross-linked polyethylene foam. The U-value is up to 1.3 W/m²K in the standard configuration. The door takes 28mm or 42mm glazing, double or triple glazed, so it helps keep your home warm in winter and cooler in summer.

How secure and weatherproof are they?

Lift & slide doors have a multi-point high security locking system, with an optional night latch so you can leave a gap for ventilation. The operating mechanism is all metal and zinc plated for strength and corrosion resistance. The system is tested to BS6375 Part 1: water tightness 300Pa, air permeability 600Pa, wind resistance 1200Pa, with zero water penetration.

What colours and handles are available?

Frames have a factory-applied polyester powder coated finish, in a wide range of colours and finishes, single or dual colour (a different colour inside and out). The standard handle is an internal operating handle in satin finish with a finger grip outside. Chrome is also available, and an external handle is an option.

Lift & slide or bi-fold: which should I choose?

Choose lift & slide if you want the largest possible panes of glass and the slimmest look, especially for wide openings. Panels can be up to 2500mm wide each, and the door slides rather than swings, so it takes up no room inside or out. Choose bi-fold if you want to open the full width of the opening in one go. We're happy to talk through both options when we visit.
